In 2016, China’s fresh cut flower shared a good market on the whole. The production area of fresh cut flower had been scaled up in different degrees, while the turnover, and export & import volumes had been soared gradually nationwide.
Yunnan province is renowned as the production center of fresh cut flower in China, and the distribution hub, which goes through a remarkable growth both in production and marketing. In 2016 alone, the production area of Yunnan province’s fresh cut flower amounted to 13.9 thousand hm2 that generating 10.06 billion stems of transaction volume, with 12.4% and 15.6% year-on-year growth respectively. While the transaction volume of Kunming International Flora Auction Trading Center(KIFA) amounted to 960 million stems which increased 14.8% in 2016 compared with 2015, and 12.68% turnover growth compared with 2015. Except for carnation, African daisy and gypsophila expanded 15.6% and 72.8% year on year on the trade volume. And the trade volume of other Herbaceous cut flowers like eustomas, limonium sinense, hydrangea macrophylla increased at different levels when that of lily remained a steady growth.
In terms of the regional production in China, seasonal complementarity among production regions has been performed smartly. For instance, cut chrysanthemum could be marketed all year around seeing that the regional planting are available in  in varying climates such as in Hainan, Guangdong, Yunnan, Zhejiang and other provinces. In addition, the production area of fresh cut flower in Yunnan extends to further afield rather than focusing on the central regions of Yunnan province.
But in 2016 the export of fresh cut flower experienced a recovery growth while the import volume emerged huge increase. According to the customs statistics, the export turnover of domestic fresh cut flower in 2016 reached 283 million dollars with 10.85 % while the import turnover was 215 million dollars with 0.2% growth, compared with last year. On the one hand, China primarily exports flower products to Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, America, HongKong, etc. In turn, diversified flowers will be imported from varying countries. For instance, cut cattleya is imported from Thailand, rose and gypsophila species are imported from Ecuador, while tuberhybrida group from Chile, herbaceous peony and hydrangeas from New Zealand, etc.
1. Production and Marketing Characteristics of Fresh Cut Flower
Investment Raised and Civilities Improved with Diversified Species and Premium Quality
Floral industry was under the spotlight of external capital in 2016. Firstly, the emphasis of capital began to shift from flower trading to production, leading to the emerging of a flood of flower production bases of high standard and modernization. Furthermore, the growers thought highly of the upgrading of manufacturing facilities. While a variety of new species were introduced in due to the demand for new species of herbaceous flowers growing heavily. Driven by evolving technology, facilities and flower species as well as the boosting demand for premium flowers, the growers are advancing their awarenesses on flower planting. It becomes an industrial consensus that flower of good quality and diversified species will lead the market.
Flower Consumption Enlarged, Market Expanded
China’s floral consumption has expanded into a kind of daily consumption with an accelerating marketing which is driven by floral e-commerce players. Based on the market consumption of each production region in 2016, some herbaceous cut flowers had seen a varying growth, such as rose with multiple buddings, gypsophila, eustomas, hydrangea and other herbaceous cut flowers. On the premise of growing marketing, the demand market for flower also enlarged. That brought about the slight market changes for flower consumption structure. For instance, varies fresh cut flowers that grew in Yunnan province had seen a extraordinary but upsurged market growth in last March, November and December. And that market changes will continue in future.
Import and Export Flower Market Upturns
The export data on domestic fresh cut flower in 2016 well illustrated the rapid development of flower industry, which was closely related to the CNY Exchange rates and the rising consumption capacity of Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand and Singapore, etc.
After the overwhelming growth on flower import in 2014 and 2015, China’s import for flower has then slowed down. The flower species imported primarily focus on the original and new, strange ones which are not available to plant domestically. In 2016, the import for chrysanthemum remained 60% growth and was mainly from Vietnam. It marks the increasing regional complementarity, greater importance of China’s flower market in the world as well.
2. Trend Prediction for Fresh Cut Flower’s Production and Marketing in 2017
In 2017, the fresh cut flower markets in production regions keeps steadily growth while the concerns for flower species, quality and brand remain the features of flower consumption. Along with the accelerated flow of social capital and the speedy development of production area, construction for parks production is on track. Accordingly, the structure and species variety will be enhanced. Production capacity of rose, eustoma, gypsophila, hydrangea, and herbaceous flower will perform further improvement along with rising periodic risks and the number of floral e-commerce players will go up along with the subdivided markets. Owing to the accelerating export, the import of flowers will take on slow growth owing to the strengthened substitutability of domestic products. In this context, more alternative species that cannot be produced at home will be introduced in.
